- Uncommon Leader Insights – In a recent episode of The Uncommon Leader Podcast I had the chance to chat with USA Today best-selling author, Rick Torrison about his new book, Born Limitless. Throughout life, we often encounter beliefs that shape our behavior and limit our potential and here are my takeaways from what he suggests to overcome those limiters.
- Stay Aware – Recognize limiting beliefs—those thoughts and narratives that inhibit your growth. Awareness is the first step to transformation.
- State Desires – Clearly articulate your new, limitless beliefs. Declare what you want in life, not what you fear.
- Shift Mindset – Transition from a mindset of scarcity and limitation to one of abundance and potential. Replace limiting language with empowering vocabulary.
- Switch Behaviors – Align your actions with your new beliefs. Consistent, belief-driven behaviors lead to sustainable outcomes.
- Stride By Faith – Ground your transformation in personal faith and core values. These serve as pillars for lasting change.
- Secure Accountability – Engage with accountability groups or mentors who can help turn around limiting beliefs.
This conversation resonated deeply for me and invited self-reflection on my own beliefs and behaviors. To sustain progress, I must consistently challenge and elevate my mindset. As Rick succinctly puts it, “You were created for more.”

- Read More – In the pursuit of personal development and leadership excellence, one powerful habit stands out: reading. My commitment to personal growth starts with being intentional about setting aside time for reading regardless of my ‘busy’ schedule. In addition to my daily devotional, I am often reading three to four books simultaneously, and I invest 10-12 hours a week in personal development through reading, podcasts, writing, and podcast hosting.
In a recent blog post, Mark Cole, CEO of Maxwell Leadership, highlights some compelling points about the value of reading:
- Reading is foundational for personal development: Dr. Seuss once said, “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go.” Great leaders are like sponges, constantly seeking knowledge, acquiring new skill sets, and refining existing competencies. While there are multiple avenues for learning, reading remains a tried-and-true method for personal and professional growth.
- Reading is the pathway to learning: Mark’s boss and Chairman of Maxwell Leadership, John Maxwell emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, stating that “the day we stop reading and learning is the day we stop leading and growing”. If we aspire to lead organizations and empower those around us, we must first invest in our own growth.
Mark pointed out that the average American reads one book per year while the average CEO reads 4 to 5 books per month. Also, studies show that active readers are likely to have annual incomes more than five times greater than those who spend little or no time reading.
Leadership and reading go hand in hand. All great leaders share a common trait—they are readers. By immersing ourselves in books, we gain access to diverse perspectives, timeless wisdom, and invaluable insights. Reading expands our horizons, challenges our thinking, and equips us with the tools necessary to lead effectively. It is through reading that we unlock our full potential as leaders.
So, the question is not whether we should read, but rather what we should read. By curating your reading list to align with your interests, goals, and areas of growth, you can maximize the impact of your reading journey. Whether it’s biographies, self-help books, industry-specific literature, or thought-provoking novels, each choice contributes to your personal and professional development.
- Read More – Here we go. We are traveling together on a journey with an inspiring speaker, and author, Ed Mylett, and his book “The Power of One More – The Ultimate Guide to Success and Happiness”. As an avid listener of Mylett’s podcast, I’m thrilled to revisit this great book that holds a special place in my Top Ten influential reads. Join me as we uncover wisdom within its pages.
Chapter Twelve – “One More Habit”
I have adopted the mantra that ‘Excellence Only Happens on Purpose’. Discipline can be defined as doing what you need to do (your habits) when you need to do it even when you don’t want to. You achieve excellence when you are intentional about documenting the disciplines (habits) you need to execute on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis and then acting on those habits.
Positive mindsets and positive thoughts are critical, but not enough. We must put those thoughts into action. Philippians 4:8-9 encourages us to align our thoughts and our actions: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” Yes, we should THINK about positive excellent, noble things, BUT we also must implement those thoughts and put them into practice!

Ghandi famously quipped:
Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.
Mark Twain said it simpler when he wrote, “Actions speak louder than words but not nearly as often.”
To realize your best life, it’s not enough to think about what you want to do. Unless you put actions to those thoughts, you’re not going far. Combining positive thinking with intentional actions aimed directly at achieving your dreams will dramatically increase your chances of uncommon success.
