  • Uncommon Leader Insights – In one recent episode of The Uncommon Leader Podcast, guest Penny Zenker talked about her new book, The Reset Mindset.

Here are a few of my takeaways from our conversation:

  1. Clarity and Awareness: Penny Zenker emphasized the paramount importance of knowing the right goals. Pursuing the wrong objectives can lead us astray, regardless of our effort. Gaining clarity and being aware of what truly matters enables us to align our actions effectively. Take a moment to step back and assess your current goals. Are they leading you towards your ultimate vision, or is it time for a reset? Penny’s advice here is simple yet profound: continuous reassessment is the key to sustainable success.
  2. Dynamic Reassessment: Much like solving a Rubik’s cube, Penny introduced a three-step process to simplify complex situations and reach goals faster. It starts with stepping back, gaining perspective, and realigning efforts. This “dynamic reassessment” approach is essential, whether you’re handling emotions, making decisions, or seeking solutions. By anchoring these steps in your daily routine, you become adept at navigating challenges and changes with agility. Are you making time to pause and reassess, or are you too busy to invest in these crucial reset moments?
  3. Practicing Intentional Resets: Cultivating a reset mindset isn’t an overnight change; it’s about building a habit of seizing smaller moments to reset. Penny underscored the importance of being intentional in personal and professional growth. Leaders need to recognize trigger points indicating the need for a reset. By fostering a proactive environment that encourages these moments, you pave the path for greater success. Start with small steps. Identify moments in your day where a mini-reset can help you realign and refocus.

By internalizing Penny’s insights, we can transform our approach to growth and adaptability. It’s not just about change but about being intentional, disciplined, and agile in how we reset and realign our goals and actions. As you reflect on these takeaways, consider how you can implement them in your life and work, fostering a mindset that welcomes resets for continuous improvement.

  • Be Disciplined – As a leader, it’s tempting to jump in and solve every problem your team faces. However, empowering your team to tackle challenges independently is crucial for their growth and development(and yours, too!). These 5 easy to remember questions are a powerful tool for guiding your team through a systematic  problem-solving process:
  1. What is your target? Help your team define their desired outcome clearly.
  2. Where are you today? Assess their current situation and identify the gap between where they are and where they want to be.
  3. What is the biggest barrier? Encourage them to pinpoint the primary barrier hindering their progress.
  4. What is one thing you can do to eliminate the barrier? Prompt them to brainstorm a concrete action step.
  5. When can you show me? Establish accountability by setting a date to meet and review the steps your team member has taken.

A bonus question you can ask at the end is “How Can I Help?” This question is not that you can do the work for them, but rather determine which tools or training that may need to be successful!

By incorporating these questions into your leadership approach, you’ll foster a culture of accountability, and continuous improvement. Remember, your role is to equip your team so that they can grow into the leader you need them to be.

  • Read More –  Markus Kaulius’ Play a Bigger Game is a powerful exploration of overcoming adversity and finding true fulfillment. Drawing from his own experiences, Kaulius offers practical advice and insights that can inspire and encourage readers.

One of the most compelling aspects of the book that connected me with Markus is his personal story of overcoming bullying in his teenage years.   His journey of transformation, from timid to a confident leader, is a testament to the power of positive mindset and personal growth.

Throughout the book, Kaulius shares numerous quotes and anecdotes that resonate deeply. He emphasizes the importance of surrounding yourself with positive influences, taking action, and encouraging others.

“A prophet is not without honor except in his own town…”  Mark 6:4 – Markus’ talked about how a location change (a family trip to Miami) allowed him not to be seen by others as they saw him, but rather as God saw him without judgement from others in his home town.

“It’s better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you’ll drift in that direction.” – Warren Buffett  – Do you want to be a healthy & fit person? Then, hang out with healthy & fit people! Want to be disciplined?  Hang around disciplined people!! 

“It’s important to think things through, but many use thinking as a means of avoiding action.” – Robert Herjavek – Without doing, all the planning and thinking has zero value.  It is much easier to act yourself into a new way of thinking than it is to think yourself into a new way of action.

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… The man who never reads lives only once.” – George R Martin – There is a gift in reading that challenges us to make changes.  There is a gift in reading that teaches us how many have used pain to fuel their purpose.  There is a gift in reading that allows you to re-invent yourself regularly.

“When you encourage others, you in the process are encouraged because you’re making a commitment and difference in that person’s life.  Encouragement really does make a difference.” – Zig Ziglar Be an encourager.  When you encourage, be sure that the encouragement is accurate, truthful and unique to the person you are giving it to!

Kaulius’ book is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to improve their life and achieve their goals. It’s a reminder that even in the face of adversity, it’s possible to find fulfillment and live a meaningful life.
