Training the Vessel for the Long Game: Squaring Your Leadership Healthspan

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”1 Timothy 4:8

Happy Friday, Brew Nation!

If you’ve been reading the Champions Brew for any length of time, you’ve heard me talk about why I hit the gym, lift weights, and track my daily conditioning: SO THAT I can dance at my grandchildren’s weddings.

I train physically to expand my healthspan—not just living longer, but staying functional, active, and vital for as long as possible.

As leaders, we must apply this exact same mindset to every other domain of our lives: our faith, our finances, our relationships, and our executive work. Practices like reading, intentional thinking time, spiritual growth, and proactive relationship-building aren’t just good habits for this week—they are bridges to a longer span of meaningful influence.

Squaring the Curve: Beyond the “Marginal Decade”

In his book Outlive, Dr. Peter Attia talks about the concept of “squaring the longevity curve”—maximizing your physical capacity right up to the end so you avoid a slow, painful “marginal decade” of physical frailty.

This isn’t just a physical concept. It is a parallel blueprint for your intellectual, spiritual, and relational healthspan.

Just as muscle mass and joint stability decline without intentional resistance training in your 40s and 50s, your mental agility, spiritual depth, and relational equity will wither without daily, disciplined practice.

If you want to make an extraordinary impact at 80—mentoring rising executives, writing books, and leading your family with clarity—you cannot coast through your middle decades. If we don’t intentionally invest today, we face a leadership “marginal decade”: physically frail, mentally sluggish, and relationally isolated.

The Scriptural Anchor: Vital and Green

Scripture promises a clear reward for those who commit to long-term spiritual and physical stewardship:

“Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green.” — Psalm 92:14

Notice the condition: fruitfulness in old age doesn’t happen by accident. It belongs to those who stay planted, disciplined, and intentionally engaged in the vessel God gave them.

The “Now What?” vs. The “So That”

Uncommon Leaders align their daily execution directly with their ultimate vision:

The “Now What?” (Daily Practice):

  • Physical: Execute resistance, conditioning, and mobility training today.
  • Intellectual: Guard non-negotiable blocks for reading, quiet reflection, and strategic planning.
  • Spiritual & Relational: Abide daily (John 15:5) and build relationship equity long before a crisis hits.

The “So That” (Ultimate Vision):

  • SO THAT you can thrive, dance at your grandchildren’s weddings, and sustain a Kingdom impact that changes the trajectory of lives for decades to come—finishing the race strong rather than sputtering out early.

“When you look at your calendar, your reading habits, and your physical health routine, are you building practices that will let you thrive at 80, or are you just trying to survive the week?”

The Healthspan Audit

To ensure you aren’t settling for a slow decline, execute these three steps today:

  • Audit Your Daily Inputs: Look at your calendar for next week. Did you schedule time for physical movement, reading, and quiet reflection, or did urgent tasks swallow your healthspan?
  • Define Your “So That”: Write down your personal “So That” statement on an index card and place it on your desk or bathroom mirror as a daily reminder of your multi-decade mission.
  • Pick One “Resistance” Exercise: Identify one area—whether adding 20 minutes of lifting, starting a new book, or reaching out to a friend—where you need to apply intentional resistance to build long-term strength.

Growth is the only guarantee that tomorrow will get better, but you have to invest in the vessel today. Don’t settle for surviving the week. Train to thrive at 80, keep your eyes on the prize, and keep climbing.
