What you need to do:

  • Worry Less and Make Good Choices :   One of the best pieces of advice that my wife has given to our sons over the years, especially after they were able to drive on their own and gain more independence was “make good choices”.  It is so important in our life and business to make good choices and it makes it easier if you have a process to do that.  In this short article (6-minute read) by my former boss, current mentor and friend, Tom Carmazzi, he outlines 6 steps to make better choices.  Hope this helps you grow in your decision making!
  • Exercise Daily:      Are you having trouble finding the ‘motivation’ to get in shape and stay in shape?  It probably isn’t because of your ability, but rather your mindset.  (2 minutes) Here are 5 tips from Jeremy Scott of Jeremy Scott Fitness to assist in making that journey to Healthy:
  • Your body becomes its function, or think of it as “your body becomes what it repeatedly does.” Do the activities you want your body to transform to. If you sprint, you’ll become a better sprinter by losing fat and gaining muscle.
    • Choose fitness activities that you love. Your heart knows no difference between yoga or Crossfit. It only knows perceived stress and rate it is going. Get your heart rate up any way you can, you will be more successful if it’s doing something you love.
    • Start eating right today, don’t wait until tomorrow, and please don’t wait until Monday. You will never be ready and you will never have more time in your life than you do right now to make progress start today.
    • Don’t compare yourself to others. It doesn’t matter what someone else looks like, or if they are faster or stronger than you. This isn’t a competition and sure as heck isn’t a race. All that matters is that you are the best version of you. Don’t worry about other people. Focus on giving your 100% effort whatever that looks like.
    • Don’t make excuses. Everyone can be in amazing shape if they stay focused, set goals, and be consistent day in and day out.
  • Think Positively – Carpe Diem – Seize the Day.  Here is a link to a short video clip (3 minutes) from the movie Dead Poet’s Society, where Mr. Keating (played by the late Robin Williams) takes his class on a little ‘gemba’ walk to encourage them to seize the day, to make a difference with the time they have.  Really cool to me.  Takeaways for me:
    • Our time here on earth is limited.  Don’t wait until tomorrow to make an impact or a difference
    • Be grateful and notice the small things around you that we may take for granted
    • Robin Williams was a great actor!

I used this movie clip at a leadership retreat and to kick off a new year and it was very impactful and motivational for the team.  We ended up having a great session.  Are there other movies that you have seen that you find to be motivational?  Could you use them to help add value to others (family, team, friend, etc.)?

What you need to do:

Call to Action:  What do you need to do today to seize the day?  What choice do you make to be extraordinary (aka, Uncommon!)?
