- Uncommon Leader Insights –Throughout life’s journey, our growth often comes through significant changes and heartfelt reflections. In Episode 126 of The Uncommon Leader Podcast, I went deep into transformative experiences with my son, Joseph Gallagher. Here are three pivotal takeaways from our enlightening conversation:
- Embrace Change: Joseph’s personal and spiritual growth over the past few years offers a remarkable lesson in humility and the recognition of divine intervention. Moving from living in a van to a new home, finding love, and starting a new job with Boulder Valley Young Life, Joseph’s journey underscores the value of being open to changes that go beyond our understanding.
- Invest in Community: Joseph’s work with Boulder Valley Young Life is a testament to the power of building meaningful relationships. From mentoring young volunteers to running a summer camp on a remote island in British Columbia, Joseph emphasizes the importance of investing time and effort into others. His hands-on approach to nurturing his team of 29 young leaders showcases his belief in equipping individuals to make lasting impacts.
- Balance your Calling: One of the most insightful discussions in this episode revolves around the delicate balance between Joseph’s marriage, ministry, and personal calling. Joseph highlights the significance of clear communication, mutual support, and unwavering belief in each other’s callings. Weekly date nights play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy marital relationship. Moreover, Joseph’s commitment to his ministry, coupled with his role as a Christian big brother, underscores the importance of integrating personal and professional life harmoniously.
Joseph Gallagher is wise beyond his years. His story is a reminder of the power of faith, the importance of nurturing relationships, and the value of balancing different aspects of life. These takeaways not only inspired me but also challenged me to reflect on my own journey and the impact I wish to create. We can learn a lot from our kids!

- Sleep Well – I am tired of being tired. It’s a simple equation, but one I’ve struggled to solve. Quality sleep, that elusive, restorative medicine, has been in short supply. But I’m determined to change that.
Sleep quality is a science, and it turns out I’ve been failing the class. Deep and REM sleep are the first class tickets to feeling refreshed, but I’ve been stuck in economy class. That’s why I’m embarking on a sleep overhaul.
Inspired by Justin Roethlingshoefer’s insights on ownership and personal responsibility in his book The Power of Ownership, I’m taking control of my sleep performance. His simple yet effective 3-2-1 rule is my starting point:
3 hours before bed: No food
2 hours before bed: Unplug from work
1 hour before bed: Screen-free zone
I’m also committing to a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends. It’s time to reset my body’s internal clock.
This is just the beginning of my sleep journey. I’ll be sharing my progress, challenges, and successes along the way. Join me as I strive to reclaim those precious hours of restful slumber.

- Read More – Here we go. We are traveling together on a journey with an inspiring speaker, and author, Ed Mylett, and his book “The Power of One More – The Ultimate Guide to Success and Happiness”. As an avid listener of Mylett’s podcast, I’ve been thrilled to revisit this great book that holds a special place in my Top Ten influential reads. Join me as we uncover wisdom within its pages.
Chapter Eighteen – “One More Prayer”
Ed Mylett’s assertion that prayer and faith can be strategic tools for achieving goals aligns well with my personal development the past few years. While this post isn’t a religious post, per se, it is a reflection on how faith has influenced me.
Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as “confidence in what we hope for and assurance of what we do not see.” It’s about taking that leap into the unknown, trusting in something greater than ourselves.
Faith is a muscle, and like any muscle, it strengthens with consistent exercise.
Initially, prayer felt like navigating uncharted waters. When I was asked to pray in public’ the fear of saying the wrong thing was petrifying. But with practice, prayer became a conversation, a connection, so much so that I now welcome those opportunities. A daily prayer prompt from the Bible app has been instrumental in helping me to build my confidence.
The key, I’ve found, is consistency. Pray in the good times and the bad. Pray with intention, not just as an afterthought. Most importantly, pray boldly.
A prayer I have taped to my laptop serves as a powerful reminder of my purpose:
Lord, give me more than I need so that I can be a blessing to the world around me. Use me so that my life might make an eternal impact in the lives of others. Be with me, because what you’ve called me to is too big for me. Strengthen me and rescue me from every attack of the enemy.
Prayer and faith are a personal journey for me. I don’t have it all together and I am not suggesting that you must pray. I am simply sharing that for me, prayer has become impactful in my growth as a leader.

“It’s better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you’ll drift in that direction.” – Warren Buffett
