How to Overcome Hardship and Build Uncommon Perseverance

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” — James 1:2-4

Happy Friday, Brew Nation!

I am writing this week’s Brew from 7,000 feet in elevation in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

I’m out here facilitating a high-level strategy retreat. To be completely transparent with you, during my quiet time this morning, I found myself lamenting the start of the week. Thus far, the retreat hasn’t gone the way I had hoped or planned in terms of immediate output and alignment.

While trying to focus during my morning devotional, I opened up a video from the Bible Project summarizing the book of Ephesians. In less than nine minutes, it breaks down Paul’s profound letter. Yet, I found myself hitting the “restart” button three times in the very first minute!

Between the mental noise of preparing for Day 3 of the retreat and the sheer depth of Paul’s message in Ephesians, the complexity of it all was overwhelming my focus.

After the fourth restart, I caught myself and smiled. I remembered a word of encouragement sent by a trusted brother, and three simple words echoed in my mind:

“Embrace the complexity.”

Simple… But Not Easy

Too often as leaders, we want the answers handed to us on a silver platter. We want the straight line, the easy win, and the quick fix. But the simple truth is that real breakthrough and lasting success are almost always found on the other side of doing something hard.

It’s simple to understand, but so hard to execute. It’s not supposed to be easy!

That principle reminds me of one of the greatest coaching speeches in cinematic history—Rocky Balboa talking to his son:

“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place… and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep movin’ forward… That’s how winning is done!”  (Tell me that you didn’t read it in Rocky’s voice!!)

Scripture is equally direct about this reality. James—who was an absolute master coach—writes in James 1:2-4 that we should consider it pure joy when we face trials, because the testing produces perseverance, maturity, and completeness. Paul echoes this in Romans 5, reminding us that suffering and hardship aren’t meaningless—they produce endurance, character, and hope.

3 Steps to Embrace the Complexity

When you find yourself at 7,000 feet—literally or metaphorically—staring at a complex situation that isn’t following your script, how do you handle it?

  1. Wake Up to Awareness: Smell the coffee! Stop expecting high-level leadership, business growth, or deep relationships to be easy. Once you accept that complexity is part of the territory, you stop being surprised when resistance shows up.

  1. Listen for the Nudges (“Body Strong, Mind Still”): Right before my very first Spartan Race, a coach sent me those four words: “Body Strong… Mind Still.” You can’t hear wisdom if you’re sprinting through the noise. Protect your quiet personal development time so you can hear the truth over the chaos.
  2. Keep Moving Forward… With Joy: Don’t let complexity paralyze you. Don’t point fingers or look for shadows to blame. Take the hit, adjust the strategy, keep your head up, and execute the next right step.

“Hardships are transformative rather than meaningless. It’s not about how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” — Rocky Balboa

The Perseverance Check

  • Stop Pointing Fingers: Identify one area in your business, health, or family where things aren’t going to plan. Stop looking for an excuse or a “shadow” to blame.
  • Anchor Your Mind Still: Carve out 15 minutes of uninterrupted quiet time tomorrow morning before opening your phone. Let your mind settle so you can process the hard stuff clearly.
  • Take Step 1: What is one action step you can take today to move that complex boulder forward, even by just 1%? Execute it today.

Growth is the only guarantee that tomorrow will get better, but growth never happens on the easy path. Embrace the hits, keep moving forward with joy, and keep climbing.
