The 20 Mile March: Why Daily Discipline Beats Frantic Effort in Uncommon Leadership

“The consistent winner is the one who chooses the long-term goal over the short-term comfort.”– Coach John Gallagher

Happy Friday, Brew Nation!

Life is a series of choices. In an ideal world, we make the big choices early, and then we simply manage those choices daily.

The tension between making the choice and managing the daily grind was crystal clear at my Men’s group this week.

The Immediate Choice vs. The Long-Term Plan

The morning started innocently enough. A beautiful platter of pastries was placed lovingly on our table, right in the middle of our discussion. They smelled fantastic—butter, sugar, and comfort—and the cheese danishes looked even better.

“Want one?”

Of course, I wanted one! Many of us said no (I did, too). A couple of guys said yes. We talked about willpower, but what we were really talking about was choices and how we manage those choices daily. Those who enjoyed the danish didn’t make a bad choice; they made the choice they wanted to make at that moment.

Then, the conversation shifted to running. As I prep for my third and fourth Spartan races in the next two weeks, I have still not discovered the love for running. Quite the opposite. I hate to run. I love HAVING run, though!

But there were possessed people at my study table who claimed they genuinely love to run.

What does this all have to do with leadership? Sometimes we get to do things we love, and sometimes we have to do things we don’t. But the consistent winner is the one who chooses the long-term goal over the short-term comfort.

Leadership in a Long, Hard Marathon

That led us to the most critical concept from the table: the “20 Mile March.”

This idea, developed by Jim Collins in the book Great by Choice, is the essence of Uncommon Leadership. Enterprises that prevail in turbulence don’t rely on huge, frantic bursts of effort. They self-impose a rigorous, consistent performance mark to hit every single day, regardless of the conditions.

Think of it like hiking across the United States: you march at least 20 miles a day, every day.

The 20 Mile March imposes order amidst disorder, discipline amidst chaos, and consistency amidst uncertainty. It works only if you actually hit your march day after day.

All these stories link together. Whether it was the daily choice on our nutrition, the daily choice for our health & fitness, or the daily discipline needed for a 3,000-mile journey, like the tortoise and the hare, the steady, disciplined one will generally win. For the full article, click here: Jim Collins – Concepts – 20 Mile March

We will always face adversity in life always. That is a guarantee. But we are called to meet it with intention and discipline:

The reality is that leadership requires us to meet trials not just with grit, but with steadfast commitment.

“Count it as joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces **steadfastness**.” (James 1:2-4)

When we make the right choices and then manage those choices daily, we will win in the long run. Pun intended.  Now, where are my running shoes?

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
