What you need to know

  • Quote:   “The most reliable way to change your life is by not changing your entire life. If you try to change everything all at once, you will quickly find yourself pulled back into the same patterns as before. But if you merely focus on changing one specific habit and work on it until it becomes part of your normal day, you will find your life changes naturally as a side effect. Improve the whole by mastering one thing.” – James Clear, author of Atomic Habits

This worked for me when I started really getting serious about becoming healthy back in 2012.  A friend of mind, Adam Ward, challenged me to try one thing: “Stop eating french fries.” – Simple, not easy… But, it worked!  It became our mantra when we consulted with leaders and  organizations to just change one habit – #Stopeatingfrenchfries

  • Eat Healthy (or is it Have Fun?… not sure):   Where are my hot sauce lovers?   Here is a list of 9 of the WORST and BEST hot sauces based on ingredients.  I have had 4 of the worst (I like Cholula) and 4 of the Best (I like Crystal the best of the best…).  I put hot sauce on a lot of foods.  My favorite snack recently is some Frank’s Buffalo Wing Sauce on cottage cheese!  YUM!!
  • Stay Positive:  Much of my reading this year has been geared to having more of a positive mindset.  I am not sure if that was intentional, but it sure has worked out that way.  So far this year I have read The 4:8 Principle, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, Developing the Leader Within You 2.0, Atomic Habits, and am well on my way to reading the Bible in a year for the first time ever.  I can’t wait to talk about the impact THAT has made on me!  You cannot turn on the TV without hearing about a crisis, or some negative situation going on.  It is so important in days like these to maintain a positive mindset, especially as a leader.  John Maxwell says that leaders are dealers in Hope!  And I must take care of my own mind so that I can be a model of hope to others… a dealer in hope!  So, how do we maintain a positive mindset?  Well, here are 4 ways that I maintain a positive mindset.  There is no rocket science to it:
  1.  Turn off the TV – There is just no reason to fill my mind with the negative that is the daily ‘news’.  My wife and I have found great joy in two things about television right now: Andy Griffith reruns, and the Food Network!
  2. Read inspirational books – I already touched on my reading list so far this year.  My daily routine includes about 45 minutes of reading and I make sure it nourishes the soul!
  3. Listen to inspirational music – My meditation in the morning is a great worship song.  I so look forward to the music at church on Sundays.  Our church worship team is so talented.  Inspirational and fun music brings a smile to my face (and often a tear of humility as well!)
  4. Exercise daily – For me, exercise clears my mind.  Many people like to exercise in the mornings, but I find respite in mid-morning walk and going to the gym 3 times a week in the early evening.  It helps to clear my mind and energize me.
