Your Champions Brew for Friday August 19, 2022

Welcome back brew nation!  It’s the “Friday Coffee Guy” coming to you with The Champion’s Brew, a weekly assembly of material I am reading, listening to, watching, or thinking about that is designed to equip and call you to uncommon leadership.  I often add my own little spin based on my takeaways and would love your input as well.  Any of the points especially impact you?  Drop me a note at [email protected], or comment on the blog to keep the conversation going!  I believe you will discover that the format is not only useful, but also that you can consume it within the time it takes you to enjoy your daily ‘brew’!  Become a member of the Champions Brew Nation by subscribing here!!

Here is your weekly sip of what I have been reading, listening to or watching to equip me to:

  • Work Hard – “Just because something is simple doesn’t make it easy.” – I have found myself saying this in coaching sessions and working with clients recently.  The actual pursuit of Uncommon leadership requires a commitment to the fundamentals and basic principles required to be successful AND a willingness to work relentlessly to master those principles.  For example, as a leader who wants to grow, we KNOW we need to make a commitment to personal development that might include reading a number of books per year or listening to podcasts or seeking out feedback from a mentor.  We KNOW that AND we also know that it is not easy to execute.  Distractions get in the way.  Fear gets in the way.  Procrastination gets in the way.  It does for me as well at times. The journey to Uncommon requires a willingness AND a commitment to completing daily, weekly and monthly disciplines to grow.  Do not mistake simple with easy.
  • Equip others – The mission of Growing Champions is to inspire and equip leaders to grow themselves, grow others and grow their organizations.  In a podcast I listened to this week, John Maxwell outlined his strategy for Equipping People.  I find it to be a good outline of what it takes.  Once again, simple, but not easy.  He outlined Five ‘M’s for equipping people:
    • Modeling – First I must do it
    • Mentoring – First I do it, and you are with me
    • Monitoring – You do it, and I am with you
    • Motivating – You do it
    • Multiplying – You model it, and someone is with you! Aka, Growing Champions who Grow Champions!!
  • Eat Healthy – In last week’s episode, I talked about my morning reading ritual.  While that development time is important, it is also vital to start the day off well from a body fuel standpoint as well.  Here is how I start my morning:
    • Coffee – Of course it is coffee.  I am the Friday Coffee Guy and why else would I call this the Champions Brew?!  I wouldn’t consider myself a coffee snob by any means, but I start the day off grinding up come Colombian coffee beans and brewing a pot of coffee.  I didn’t really start drinking coffee until my senior year in college.  It took SEVERAL pots of coffee and all night study sessions to get through Electrical Engineering 101 & 103 my senior year!!
    • Collagen peptides – Over the past couple years I have started to put two scoops in my first cup of coffee as a protein boost to start the day.  I have heard that it helps with nail strength and tightening of skin.  As I get older, I could use all the help I could get!
    • Vitamin D – Even living in sunny South Carolina, I have been told I have a vitamin D deficiency to this supplement should help
    • Krill oil – Gotta get the Omega 3’s in for heart health and lastly
    • Athletic Greens – I was introduced to this shake my Jeremy Scott of Jeremy Scott Fitness years ago.  He offered to send me a free pack to try.  I will be honest.  There really are no GOOD tasting greens, but I have come to enjoy the taste of these in about 12 ounces of ice cold water.  I have a subscription to the pouch and to the travel packs as well.  I don’t know that they help me to ‘feel better’ daily,  per se.  I do know that in the past few years since I have been using them, I find many benefits from my digestive system, as well as I have found myself NOT getting as many sinus infections or colds each year.  I feel like giving back as Jeremy Scott did for me to get me introduced.  Would you like to try Athletic Greens?  Drop me a note at [email protected] and include your mailing address and I will send you a pack to your front door.  I also have an affiliate link where you can start a monthly subscription and get a year’s supply of Vitamin D and 5 free travel packs with your first order.  Just click here to order.  It’s been a game changer for me.

  1. Another Friday package of great information!

Your counsel reminds me of something I would tell teammates. First, Educate yourself and those around you constantly… never stop. Second, set high Expectations for yourself and the team you belong to. Third, Execute to the best of your ability.

If we all follow the three E’s and perform our roles to the highest level, chances are we will win consistently.
